Intellectual Property and Intangible Assets Initiatives

Basic Principles

Chiyoda protects our intellectual property (IP) to fuels our position ahead of the competition. We also implement rigorous measures to protect the IP of others to avoid infringements.

Intellectual Property and Intangible Assets Strategy

Our intellectual property and intangible assets primarily consist of relationships, data, technology/know-how, and brand. These assets do not exist independently; rather, they are interrelated as part of an 'Intellectual Property and Intangible Assets Cycle', through which they continuously create value. In our intellectual property and intangible assets strategy, we take this cycle as a fundamental premise. We assess the current status of each assets we hold, and we also identify the assets that will be essential for future business and serve as sources of differentiation. Based on this, we identify initiatives to acquire and strengthen the necessary assets, and promote these initiatives in stages under an appropriate allocation of resources.

Our Intellectual Property and Intangible Assets Cycle
  • Through value creation and collaboration with customers and business partners, we accumulate data that contributes to our business competitiveness appropriately.
  • As we develop our business based on this data, we refine the insights gained from data into reproducible technology/know-how, thereby elevating them into a source of competitive advantage.
  • By delivering value through the application of such technology/know-how, we earn high evaluations for quality and reliability. As these strengths become widely recognized, they are established as part of our brand.
  • As our brand becomes firmly established and our strengths and reliability gain broader recognition, our points of contact and opportunities for collaboration with new customers and business partners expand, leading to the creation of new relationships.

Chiyoda's Technology Landscape

One of the key IP & intangible assets of our Group is our technology, and we have established 'Chiyoda's Technology Landscape' to transform tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge and map technology for value creation. As an integrated engineering company, we socially implement systems that combine our own internal technologies and external technologies owned by others to accumulate many technologies. We classify our technologies into three categories: ① Own Technology (proprietary technology), ② Key Capability (technology owned by others, mastered through licensing agreements etc) and ③ Key Technology (technologies owned by others). We map these categories across our business domains into 'Chiyoda's Technology Landscape', shared within Chiyoda to promote value creation, such as proposing solutions to customers, building co-creation schemes with others and formulating technology development strategies.

Organizational Structure

The IP Section is part of the Corporate Planning Department, which consolidates our company-wide business strategies. The Section formulates and implements Intellectual Property and Intangible Assets Strategy aligned with business strategies.

The IP Section visualizes and organizes our IP, and that of others, related to new businesses, using methods such as IP landscaping to identify technologies for development and partnering.

The IP Section also collaborates with business and technology divisions to extract inventions and organize our patent portfolio and implements stringent and comprehensive IP investigations prior to developing a new business to mitigate the risk of infringing the IP rights of others. The Section also conducts IP Due Diligence (IP DD) for the Value Innovation Department prior to investing in start-up companies and conducts IP strategy development for new businesses adopted in the in-house entrepreneurship program.
